But understand this… in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money… having the appearance of godliness but denying its power… burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning but never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.
2 Timothy 3: 1, 2, 5, 7 (ESV)
These verses speak directly to many who have surrendered their lives to the lure of sin and idolatry, their hearts overwhelmed with self-regard and the material world. In their self-deception, these individuals focus, often unknowingly, on themselves and on whom they may subjectively expend to help build and fortify their own earthly ambitions. And as long as these self-aggrandizing values reign over their darkened hearts, they will never understand the true riches God intends for them. Consequently, the reign of their burgeoning sin on their corrupted hearts is all they really possess, for “knowledge of the truth” leads directly to belief.
Knowledge as information is rarely if ever motivational, it’s just information. Belief is the key inspirational concept; it’s the belief that God is exactly who he says he is and will follow through on all his promises, which transforms the knowledge of the truth into the living truth. Two universal truths contribute to this spiritual disconnect that is so prominent today. First, they are desperately searching for empowerment, security, and pleasure in the material world, which in reality, is only a house of cards. Secondly, God will not be party to habitual or persistently unrighteous behavior for it goes against his very nature. We Believers, are, therefore, commanded to depart from their presence.
God, however, in his infinite mercy, gracefully provides a margin of escape for them, if they so choose. For with God, all things are possible. And as negative experiences and their repercussions start to pile up, some may begin to suspect that something is dreadfully wrong or missing from their lives. It is during these crucial moments of honest self-reflection and self-doubt that God gently lifts the veil off their hearts and minds so that they can see their own retched character in contrast to his own righteous nature to finally realize there is still eternal hope.
As believers, truth always works together for our good!
O precious Jesus, the author, and preserver of our faith and trust. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil corrupt thinking and immoral behavior that leads only to destruction and death. Let us surrender to you alone. Keep our hearts and minds cleansed and centered on you. Guide us safely through life’s many of challenges and around its pitfalls. Keep us clearly focused on you during our journey into maturity. Amen.
